Henry Miller, Diane di Prima, Ani Di Franco & the Big Apple

Diane di Prima sez: “To one who lives in New York City, the country is the country. It is all one whether you mean the Adirondacks or the Arizona desert. The country is simply Not-The-City. It means you can see the sky, and probably something green, and maybe the stars at night. Everyone in New York City always wants to go to the country, is bored to death all the while they are there, drinks as much as possible, and expresses great regret on returning to the city.”

Henry Miller sez: “Sailing around the Battery from one river to the other, gliding close to shore, night coming on, the streets dotted with scurrying insects, I felt as I had always felt about New York—that it is the most horrible place on God’s earth. No matter how many times I escape I am brought back, like a runaway slave, each time detesting it, loathing it, more and more.”

Ani DiFranco sez: “I can’t wait to get back to New York City where at least when I walk down the street, no one ever hesitates to tell me exactly what they think of me.”

So...what do you think of New York City or “the country” or anything else these quotes provoke for that matter?
