John Chaney vs. Ward Churchill: Who's the real goon?
It will be instructive to watch the case of John Chaney play out. Chaney is the men’s basketball coach at Temple University. Last week, he publicly announced he’d send in a “goon” if Temple’s next opponent, Saint Joseph’s, used “illegal screens” against his team.
Just as he warned, Chaney employed one of his rarely-used players as a “goon” and St. Joe’s senior John Bryant wound up with a broken arm. Chaney was suspended for three games but, so far, only sports talk shows are saying he might be fired. Previously, the 73-year-old Chaney slapped one of his players during a game, threatened to kill one opposing coach and choked another.

As you surely know, Ward Churchill--also an employee of an American university--is under threat not only of termination but charges of treason for criticizing the U.S. government and its foreign policy.
The battle lines are drawn: Voicing an unpopular opinion vs. instigating a premeditated assault.
If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on Churchill losing his job before Chaney. Any takers?
