My newspaper-selling friend

(Storytelling Saturday makes headlines)

Once upon a time...

I don’t buy newspapers much anymore...but the time I’m most tempted to do so is when I see this friendly South Asian-looking man who sells ’em on 42nd Street near Grand Central Station. He always has a smile and says “hello” to me even if I never purchase one of his daily rags. I really feel for this poor soul because I once saw him during lunchtime giving out flyers for a topless joint.

What a life, huh? He comes to this country filled with hope and ends up selling bullshit newspapers all morning and then shifts in the afternoon to shoving pieces of paper adorned with pictures of women with breast implants at detached Yuppies as they rudely speed by him. Yeah, good ol’ America is surely the Land of Opportunity.

Just ask my newspaper-selling friend. He’ll tell ya.

Who else wants to spin a yarn?

Yesterday and today are Buy Nothing Days.

(Why not extend that vibe all year ‘round?)
