Nothing Left? (a caption contest of sorts)
Who has a caption for this 2004 image of John Kerry soaking in the love from noted working class hero, Bruce Springsteen? If you’re feeling like more than a caption...make it a full paragraph, okay? (Sorry, no prizes this time. You’ll just have to settle for the sheer joy of participation.)
Here’s my caption/paragraph:
If the mythical American Left had any doubt about its impotence, consider the 2004 presidential election. Everyone from Bruce to Michael Moore to Susan Sarandon to Dennis Kucinich eventually jumped on the Anybody-but-Bush bandwagon. Even Chomsky, Zinn, and Parenti gave tacit approval to the concept of voting against Dubya. But guess what, sports fans? Kerry still fuckin’ lost.
(I’d say it might be time to re-evaluate)
Somewhat related: It comes as no surprise to me that I’m usually described as being part of “the Left.” But what does that really mean in 2007? When Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Alan Colmes, and Jane Fonda are labeled “leftist” as naturally as Ward Churchill, Arundhati Roy, Derrick Jensen, and Alex Cockburn are, well...it seems the term “Left” has little useful meaning, uh, left.
