Only the lonely

I am 100% aware that I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve always had a loving family and an abundance of friends. In addition, I’m basically a loner. I crave solitude and never equated being alone with being lonely. Through this combination of lucky accidents, I’ve never truly felt lonely...until now, I think.

Since my Mom—my best friend—passed away, I have been experiencing emotions that are utterly new to me. I imagine this is what it feels like to be lonely. But how do I recognize loneliness if I’ve never consciously felt it before?

Head’s up: Michele and I are getting away for a day or two soon (maybe just Monday and Tuesday). My Internet access will be limited but, as always, I hope you’ll all continue to gather and chat in my (relative) absence.
