Questions inspired by Cindy Sheehan
(Sorry, no images. Don’t know how to do that on a public computer.)
Why aren’t high-profile Democrats like Hillary Clinton and John Kerry rushing down to Crawford for a photo op with Cindy? Could it be the fact that they and their party fully support this war? Or, just as likely, they are afraid of appearing soft...regardless of what their personal opinions might be?
Speaking of Dems, what if Kerry had won? Would Sheehan be camped out at his summer retreat? Even if she was (and I’m not 100% certain she would be), we all know Kerry would learn from the Clinton I-feel-your-pain model, step outside, and deftly co-opt Cindy’s grief with stories of buddies he saw killed in Vietnam and how Iraq is different and we must all work together, etc. Could he end it with a tearful hug and the PR nightmare would be diffused so we could all return to our regularly scheduled carnage?
What if Dubya ambled down with a few injured soldiers at his side and did his best to appease Cindy? Would there still be as much widespread support for Sheehan? Is this new anti-war energy more about Cindy than the war...or is Dave Lindorff right when he says “It’s not just Cindy Sheehan”?(http://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff08192005.html)
I’ve said before, but it bears repeating: The primary difference between Democrats and Republicans (especially on the highest levels) is that they tell different lies to get elected.
