Scare Tactics

“There is a profound historical legacy in the U.S., going back to…people like George Washington, for example, describing Indians as ‘wild beasts of the forest’ and ‘savage as the wolf.’”
(Ward Churchill)

Native Americans, rampaging slaves, anarchists, the Red Scare, evil-doers who hate us because we’re free...lots of ghosts and monsters out there, huh?

“We value each life in America. Everybody counts. Everybody has got worth. Everybody matters. But that’s not the way our enemy thinks. They don’t value life. They don’t care about innocent life.”
(George W. Bush)

“The propagandist’s purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human.”
(Aldous Huxley)

“We are taught to think that we need a foreign enemy. Governments work hard to get us to be afraid and to hate so we will rally behind them. If we do not have an enemy, they will invent one in order to mobilize us.”
(Thich Nhat Hanh)

“When I was growing up, it was ‘Communists’. Now it’s ‘Terrorists’. So you always have to have somebody to fight and be afraid of, so the war machine can build more bombs, guns, and bullets.”
(Cindy Sheehan)

And now for something really scary:

It was 79 years ago today…

Harry Houdini, the most celebrated magician and escape artist of the 20th century, dies of peritonitis in a Detroit hospital.

So, it’s Rosa’s fault, huh?

Condoleezza Rice sez:
“I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here today as secretary of state.”
