When Orwell met Chomsky...and more

George Orwell sez (in 1984): “In some ways she was more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to party propaganda. Once when he happened in some connection to mention the war ... She startled him by saying casually that in her opinion the war was not happening. The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the government itself, ‘just to keep people frightened.’ This was an idea that had literally never occurred to him.”

Noam Chomsky sez: “For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies, much less so in the system of ‘brainwashing under freedom’ to which we are subjected and in which all too often we serve as unwilling instruments.”

Mickey Z. sez: After a certain amount of time, doesn’t an “unwilling instrument” become a “willing instrument”?
