You can't judge a cover by its book

Last week, after seeing yet another Hollywood remake, I found myself contemplating the prospect of literary remakes. I don’t mean books based on plot premises or motifs...I’m talking about actual “cover books” in the style of “cover songs.”

If Gus Van Sant can remake “Psycho” almost frame-by-frame and Lenny Kravtiz can remake “American Woman” pretty much note-for-note, why can’t I remake, say, “Catcher in the Rye” practically word-for-word?

Of course, the real fun would lie in the subtle changes. Young Holden, for example, could end up selling ad space to phonies on his blog site. Hamlet might take his sad story to Oprah. Imagine “On the Road” with good ol’ Dean Moriarty cruising with Sal Paradise...in a Hummer.

So here’s the question: What book would you cover and how? Pitch your idea in the comments section.
