Got a Minute, Man?
The BBC reports (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4402979.stm):
“Volunteers in...Arizona are preparing to carry out their own border patrols, as part of a campaign to highlight illegal immigration ... More than 500,000 undocumented immigrants were arrested in Arizona last year. The campaign’s supporters say the Minuteman Project will highlight what they see as the federal government’s failure to tackle the immigration issue. At least 100 volunteers had registered...for the campaign ... Some of the volunteers plan to be armed.”
Not surprisingly, a fair amount of American news outlets are offering some measure of support for the Minutemen.
So, let’s see if I understand the protocol:
We’re supposed to cheer and put yellow ribbon stickers on our SUVs when Americans cross borders in Iraq and Afghanistan, kill and torture civilians, and sell off natural resources off to U.S.-based multi-nationals.
But when a Mexican needing food and/or work (thanks, in part, to NAFTA) risks life and limb to get across the border into Arizona, we’re supposed to grab a gun, drive those yellow ribbon-adorned SUVs down to the border, and play vigilante.
Do I have that right? If so, where will the oft-sought solidarity come from? Is it an impossible dream in country so divided and sub-divided? It’s high time we separate the U.S. into 50 discrete nations. I’ll get back to that idea later this week...for now:
If anyone is interested in some context about how the border crossed the Mexicans long before the Mexicans crossed the border, please click here:
