Happy Fur Free Friday and Buy Nothing Day
Before I begin: A quick thanks to Luna for the new animated Mickey Z. GIF now playing at the top of this page (and, of course, to Nancy for putting it in place). Thanks to Keir for sharing his performance yesterday...and the generous shout-out. Plus: An early Happy Birthday to Owen. Enjoy your weekend away...
Okay, on with the show...
Everyone asks “what can we do right now” to make a difference? Here’s a simple start: Today is Fur Free Friday (http://www.furfreefriday.com) and Buy Nothing Day (http://tinyurl.com/6danz). So, why not make every single day “fur-free” and as many days as possible “consumption-free”?
Their remote control imperialism is fueled by our conspicuous consumption.
(Thanks to RMJ for the image)
P.S. An old article of mine related to the fur industry:

Those of you who follow American sports probably know that the New York Mets have made a big trade for Carlos Delgado. Well, here’s something about Delgado that might interest non-sports fans, too: http://tinyurl.com/cwxfa

From today’s New York Times:
“The M&M balloon, 515 pounds of polyurethane filled with 13,335 cubic feet of helium, began to tip erratically as it entered Times Square about 11:40 a.m., witnesses said, before it hit the light pole near 43rd Street and was punctured. As the balloon collapsed, it pulled off a light fixture, which crashed to the ground amid a crowd of spectators.”
A public display of M&M affection?

Also from today’s New York Times:
“The American military is finding it difficult to distinguish insurgents from people rounded up who post no security threat.” Full story here: http://tinyurl.com/8pbm3

This article reminded me of a poem I wrote some 10-11 months ago:
Stillborn
Somewhere…
in the backstreets of Mosul
(or maybe Falluja)
it happens like a
meteor streaking across the
pre-dawn horizon
An Iraqi girl or (as she’d rather be called) teen…
standing before a window
conjures
a new thought
Something never before conceptualized
The sort of notion that, if nurtured and respected,
might alter the course of human history
Before she can savor more than three
seconds of epiphany...before her eyes can even display
the joy of revelation,
she is mistaken for an “insurgent”
(or was it “terrorist”?)
American-made bullets enter
her face...her neck..her chest
Sun begins to rise
Rays of light shoot through
bullet holes in the tattered window shade
The girl takes her last breath
as yet another day begins
There’s so much damn work to be done...
