Here's why I plan to see "War of the Worlds" today

(Warning: Rambling rationalization ahead.)

As a kid (age 2-15), I lived on the fourth floor of a five-floor walk-up. That was long enough ago for me to have experienced neighbors who didn’t lock their doors, a front stoop filled with nightly conversation and gossip, and dumbwaiters (anyone remember those?). Of course, the roaches outnumbered the humans by at least 1000 to 1...but hey.

I had an aunt who lived on the fifth floor and my grandfather was a longtime fixture on the third floor. Living with my grandfather after his return from Vietnam was my Uncle Butch...who played a major role in my interests in film, sports, and politics. It was Uncle Butch who gave me an LP recording of the Orson Welles version of “War of the Worlds” when I was no more than 10 or 11.

I practically memorized that album and have felt a powerful pull toward the story every since. For example, I used it in this article: http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Articles9/MickeyZ_Demogoguery.htm.

So, having said all that (plus the fact that I liked the book and the 1953 film), how could I not check out Spielberg’s version...even if does mean spending two hours with Tom Cruise.
