I declare this weekend to be Expendable Thanksgiving
As you know, there’s no shortage of gloom and doom on this blog. But, as G.B. Shaw sez: “The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.” Today, Expendable Thanksgiving, let’s aim our accurate observation toward Pollyanna and talk about what we’re thankful for. I don’t mean family, loved ones, and all that sentimental crap. I’m talking about little, silly, funny, guilty, often unexpected pleasures, e.g. taking a nap, attending a Mickey Z. event (see below), the way Audrey Tautou holds a spoon...stuff like that. Here’s a brief, utterly spontaneous list to give you an idea of what I mean:
The guitar solo in “Fool in the Rain,” by Led Zeppelin
Listening to the Yankee game on the radio while sitting on my fire escape
The Little Dragon
A ripe organic avocado
Petting a cat
Dara Torres’ abs
Keith Moon’s drumming on “I Can See for Miles”
Organic, fair trade, shade-grown coffee (with soy creamer, of course)
Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding
Michelle Yeoh: Kung Fu Goddess
Luciano Pavarotti singing “Che Gelida Manina" from La Boheme
(As Vonnegut sez: “In real life, as in Grand Opera, arias only make hopeless situations worse.")
Of course, this list could go on and on...but who else wants to tell us what they’re thankful for?
