Mood Change: some NYC pictures/new MZ essay on-line

When Mark Hand and Nancy Ryan (of http://www.pressaction.com fame) came up to the Big Apple, Michele and I made sure we gave them the grand tour of Astoria.

Here, while dreaming of a whole wheat-everything bagel with vegetable tofu cream cheese, Michele shows the folks in Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee Company what her favorite website is.

Later, Mark and I loitered in the Astoria Boulevard subway station. With eight wins in a row, I wore Yankee colors without shame.

Ratt’s Rumble (and other stories)

Just got an autobiographical essay of juvenile delinquency posted in the new Shotgun Mouth. Here’s an excerpt:

We all watched Ratt take a wooden bat and swing it at his tormentor. The guy
put up his arms to protect himself and the bat made contact with his left
forearm. You could see the guy’s bone sticking through the skin.

A melee ensued but not many blows were thrown. The guys from Sunnyside were
more focused on getting their friend to a hospital.

Ratt was the hero again but when we learned there would be a game the
following week in Sunnyside’s Skillman Park (at least that’s what we called
it...the Sunnysiders had another name), everyone knew we’d have a full-blown
rumble on our hands
