Next stop: Iran?

As we witness the fear mongering build-up that surrounds Iran’s nuclear program, it might be helpful—in the name of context—to hark back to previous threats (sic) against the land of the free, e.g. the myth of Soviet supremacy. Author Edward S. Herman defined the “Soviet threat” as “a large and formidable beast of prey, the size of whose claws and fangs varied with the demands of the Military-Industrial Complex.”

“It’s now virtually undisputed that the menace once attributed to the Red Army was greatly overrated,” adds journalist Ken Silverstein.

“Military history is full of trumped-up threats,” says Business Week columnist Stan Crock. “Time and again in military preparations, fears are raised that later prove unfounded.”

WMD, anyone?

Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of Defense (sic) from 1981 to 1987, unrepentant Cold Warrior, and master of spin, Caspar Weinberger remained unfazed by any evidence of U.S. deception, vis-à-vis the Soviets: “In the end, we won the Cold War,” he said, “and if we won by too much, if it was overkill, so be it.”

Next stop: Iran?

Looks like we have a full house reading Fight Club...

Tyler Durden sez:
“Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. Goddamn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need ... We’ve been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.”
