Progressive Shopping 101
About a week ago, we had an exchange here about responsible shopping...so I thought I’d share these tips from the folks at New American Dream (http://www.newdream.org) on buying wisely this holiday season… and all year ‘round.
1. Buy Less
“Last year I embarked on my typical last-minute shopping rampage for those odds and ends to round out the gifts under the tree. When I realized I had forgotten my credit card, I panicked. Then I realized that much of what I had planned to buy in my mall madness wasn’t remotely necessary. And there’s the added bonus of not being up until 2 am wrapping, or getting the mega credit card bill come January. Once I let go of my mindset of holiday gift perfection, I felt like a weight had instantly been lifted.”
- Mary, Virginia
Tip: If you’re spending the holiday away from extended family, a great gift for kids is a tape recording of a grandparent reading a bedtime story. This is just one of dozens of meaningful, inexpensive, and earth-friendly gift ideas at http://www.simplifytheholidays.org

2. Buy Local
“My husband and I are going to purchase our fruits and veggies from a local CSA and are going to continue to support our local green goods store - the Living Earth. Additionally I’d like to get together more with my neighbors and hopefully start a community garden or do a trash pick up together.”
-Lara, Massachusetts
Tip: Find your local Community Supported Agriculture
3. Buy Green
“It is a relief to know that more businesses are taking care of the environment.” - Martin, New York
Tip:Find products that are better for people and the planet - everything from sweatshop-free clothing
