"Property is organized robbery"

George Bernard Shaw said that: “Property is organized robbery.” I’m reminded of this quote thanks, in part, to the situation our friend Mudge finds himself in (see yesterday’s comments for more). Also, Joe and Suzanne out in Oregon are dealing with a torrential rains in a part of the country where insurance companies refuse to sell flood insurance.

Adam Smith sez:
“As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for its natural produce.”
(from Wealth of Nations)

Closer to home—much closer to home—our landlords just informed us that they will be selling our building soon (partially due to that same unresolved hookah bar issue) and will be seriously raising our rent in the meantime. Looks like we’ll be forced to move in the near future...no idea yet as to what that means. I guess things will not be calming down for any of us in 2006.

From Fight Club:
"The things you own end up owning you. It’s only after you lose everything that you’re free to do anything."

On a more upbeat note: Happy B’day to Mew...

In my CD player right now:
New Beginning, Tracy Chapman

“We are the spirit, the collective conscience
We create the pain and the suffering and the beauty in this world
Heaven’s here on earth
In our faith in humankind/In our respect for what is earthly
In our unfaltering belief in peace and love and understanding
I’ve seen and met angels wearing the disguise
Of ordinary people leading ordinary lives
Filled with love, compassion, forgiveness, and sacrifice
Heaven’s in our hearts”
(from: “Heaven’s Here on Earth")

Good luck, Mudge...
