"Put Away The Flags"

Howard Zinn has this article posted over at Z Net. With all due respect to the esteemed historian—a man who has been kind and helpful and influential to me—it’s boilerplate Zinn. He could write this article in his sleep and most of us could process it in our sleep. Other than offering radicals the chance to feel morally superior for about 30 seconds, what purpose does an essay like this serve?

Typically, when I ask such a sacrilegious question, I’m told to remember that someone like me is not part of Zinn’s target audience. He’s reaching out to those outside the insulated Left. Well, first of all, how many of those folks have ever heard of Z Net...never mind actually read it? Secondly, even if he were to “convert” a few hundred NASCAR Dads and Soccer Moms with this particular article, what palpable, tangible good would that serve?

I’m not being facetious. I’m genuinely wondering: What are the long and/or short term goals of such articles? If I had a good answer for that question, I’d gladly go back to churning out pieces like “Put Away The Flags.”

I’d love to hear your thoughts...
