Rules of Engagement
It was a lucky 13 years ago today that Michele and I got engaged. Not an easy choice...because we are the types to embody lyrics like this:
“No earthly church has ever blessed our union
No state has ever granted us permission
No family bond has ever made us two
No company has ever earned commission”
—Sting, “The Secret Marriage”
Or this from Joni:
“We don’t need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true”
—Joni Mitchell, “My Old Man”
What happened, you ask? Michele was in school and was covered by NYU health insurance. If we married, I would be covered, too (now you see why gay marriage is an important legal issue?). So we took the plunge in the name of co-pays...but we at least did it our way: married on the beach, no hint of religion, with only immediate family on hand.
Not the most romantic reason...but the most romantic marriage for sure.
