Rush to judgment on global warming?

When Deb at PBU (http://www.pbu.blogspot.com) asked me to write something here about “the politics of global warming”...I figured, who better to consult than the omnipotent Rush Limbaugh?

What, me worry?

“Even if polar ice caps melted, there would be no rise in ocean levels,” Rush once declared on his radio show (6/19/92). “After all, if you have a glass of water with ice cubes in it, as the ice melts, it simply turns to liquid and the water level in the glass remains the same.”

Pulling the wool over our ice?

He sure is convincing...in an appealingly simplistic kind of way. Then again, since the majority of the world’s ice is actually NOT in water but on land (in Antartica)...if that ice cap did melt, well, sea level would rise by about 200 feet.

Anyone got a mop?

When you’re mired in a heavily-conditioned commodity culture like ours, few people are willing or able to look beyond the next fiscal quarter. Profits would tumble if we accepted that humans might play a role in global warming...or if we waited to do longterm testing on, say, nuclear energy, GMOs, pharmaceuticals, or (watch out now) cell phones. Politicians owned by corporations choose profits over prudence and voila...I give you: the home of the brave and the land of the free. Please check your independence at the door.
