"Russian girls are easy" (and other things I learned on my long trip home)

Once upon a time...

Regulars here know that I was in Texas last week. What you don’t know is that the trip home was seriously delayed due to inclement weather: My 4:35 pm flight didn’t take off until 9:30 pm. This means I spent roughly six hours in the Houston airport and another three-plus hours on the plane. That’s plenty of time to learn a thing or two…

*On the cab ride to the airport, the driver and I discussed many topics and I discovered his avocation involved alternative theories, re: 9/11. As a result, I promised him I’d post this video and this link.

*This will probably come as no surprise: There are precious few vegan options at an airport named after Bush the Elder. That’s why savvy vegans always carry their own food. (Ain’t that so, James and Deb?)

*Continental Airlines has a Flight 1492 on its schedule. It’s destination? Columbus, Ohio...of course.

*As the delay dragged on, more and more of my co-passengers struck up conversations with each other (myself included). It seems there is a direct correlation between length of “crisis” and human willingness to make new friends.

*Once on the plane, I learned—to my chagrin—that not all young kids will fall asleep on a redeye flight.

*Finally, we get to the title of this post. A Guyanese taxi driver got me home from JFK at 2:45 am. On the way home, we chatted a bit and he shared with me a sad reality: Cabbies are careful to be around when flights arrive from Russia. According to this guy, many Russian girls arrive in New York with no place to stay and often end up gong home with cab drivers for a day, a week, or more. “Russian girls are easy,” he told me.

The End

Who else has a tale to tell?
