Shut up and drink your beer
The other day, I heard a beer commercial on the radio in which the voice-over was supposed to be a speaker at a rally. The basic idea was that those attending the rally were there in enthusiastic support of a particular brand of beer. To my surprise, after making a few commercial-like pronouncements to the beer-loving throng, the voiceover said: “Hey you with the hammer and sickle, what do you want?” Another voice—ostensibly that of the hammer and sickle guy—was heard...saying something about his desire to smash capitalism. This left the beer rally in a state of complete and utter silence. The primary voiceover then replied: “Uh, you’re at the wrong rally. (pause) Security, please escort the anarchist from the building.”
Here’s what I learned from this commercial:
Lesson 1: Beer makes people extremely happy.
Lesson 2: Communist, anarchist...they’re all the same.
Lesson 3: It’s not polite to bother others with your political views...especially when they’re drinking beer.
