Stray Cat Blues
There was a Cat Lady named Gloria on our old block and the number of strays she fed never ceased to amaze me. However, not every human was thrilled with her efforts and, a few years back, someone was obviously poisoning the felines.
Cat corpses became a common sight during that time period and, as if this wasn’t heinous enough, I recall a particular incident that truly brought home how despicable we humans can be. Michele and I were standing in front of Gloria’s house, talking with some neighbors about the cat situation. We were all saddened by this turn of events...and, as a brutal reminder, a dead cat lay near a pile of garbage to our right. Two young men passed us, deep in conversation. One of them glanced down and saw the cat’s body and saw fit to spit on it. As his friend blabbed away, this guy spit on the cat. It was a casual gesture with seemingly very little thought beforehand...but there you have it. We humans are so deluded, so ego-centric, so frightened that we don’t just see animals as inferior...we view them with utter contempt.
It’s extremely difficult to imagine what (if anything) will wake us up…
