Sundays in Hicksville...plus: hockey, Debord, and Marshall
Once upon a time…
I didn’t realize it when I was a kid...but my dad did not like visiting my mom’s family. Just about every Sunday, we’d pack into our piece of shit car and drive out to Hicksville, Long Island where I’d run rampant with my numerous cousins (and play doctor with a particular female cousin).
When I look back now, I can remember my dad always volunteering to handle the barbeque grill as a way to distance himself from the goings-on.
In some cases, he’d go as far as sitting in our car. He’d walk outside, plant himself in the driver’s seat, lower the windows, and just sit there singing to himself in his short sleeve shirt: just waiting for the signal that we’d be leaving soon.
Anyone else wanna tell a story?

Informal poll:
Does anyone give a shit that hockey is back?
In the meantime, let me slap down some bass…
...and offer these words from Guy Debord:
“This perfect democracy fabricates its own inconceivable enemy, terrorism. It wants, actually, to be judged by its enemies rather than by its results. The history of terrorism is written by the State and it is thus instructive. The spectating populations must certainly never know everything about terrorism, but they must always know enough to convince them that, compared with terrorism, everything else seems rather acceptable, in any case more rational and democratic.”
(1988)
...and this from Justice Thurgood Marshall:
“Take a chance, won’t you? Knock down the fences that divide. Tear apart the walls that imprison. Reach out; freedom lies just on the other side.”
