Thoughts for a Thursday...
While watching “Born Into Brothels” at the Film Forum a few days ago, Michele and I were seated in front of a very NYC couple: in their 50s with “Kerry voter” written all of them. At one point in the film, an old Indian woman expresses her fear of doing something important on a Thursday...because her mother had died on a Thursday.
The couple behind us laughed uproariously at the woman’s superstition...and I was not amused. That couple might be under the impression that a virgin gave birth to a messiah some 2000 years ago...or they might believe that their god will get pissed if they place meat and dairy on the same plate, and they have the balls to mock someone else’s delusions? It’s so goddamned easy to poke fun at the “primitives,” but it doesn’t get much more pathetic than Western culture.
I just read where the National Hockey League was well into a lockout and the 2004-5 season was in danger of being entirely lost. Sorry...I hadn’t noticed. Also, it seems there’s some kind of important (sic) basketball game being played on Xmas. Something about a “shack.”
When “Born Into Brothels” let out, I waited in the lobby while Michele used the restroom. Standing there, dazed from the images I had just witnessed, I gazed at the concession stand menu: $4.10 for a double cappuccino. We all just learned a little about poverty in India...and now we’ll wash it down with a $4.10 double cappuccino. Nice.
Another sign informed me that there was a $20 minimum if I wanted to use a credit card to purchase a particularly piggish quantity of unhealthy snacks. Ten dollars a pop for the tickets and people are spending more than $20 at the friggin’ concession stand?
Q: How long will such concessions stand?
Lastly, my latest book, “The Seven Deadly Spins,” is in a serious freefall at Amazon. After peaking at #587 on the sales list after I was on C-Span...it’s plummeting rapidly and when I last checked, was somewhere around #200,000. There can’t be 199,999 books selling better, can there?
I’m wondering if there’s any of you left out there who might wanna buy a couple or two...Anyone?
Please?
