Toys and the addict
So I’m strolling down East 86th Street the other day when I see a man on a cell phone, walking his son to school (kindergarten?). This guy is right out of Central Casting: your stereotypical banker dweeb elevated to coolness by his stock portfolio, Mercedes, and summer house in the Hamptons. His son is the image of Upper East Side privilege...except for one small detail. The toy in his hands—the toy that has him utterly enraptured—is a make-believe chainsaw...complete with a moving plastic blade and “whirring” noise.
That future clear-cutting magnate got me thinking about the time I saw a homeless man in the East Village with the board game, Operation sitting atop his overcrowded shopping cart. Think about that game...and all the kids playing it. How likely are they to ever question Western medicine as they get older?
When I was younger, my favorite games were Monopoly (capitalism) and Risk (global conquest)...how frighteningly programmed was I? Yep, it’s all about setting the parameters for expected and accepted human behavior.
Larry Law sez: “Our conditioning into accepting the morality of capitalism begins at an early age.”
Tom Robbins sez: “The moon invented natural rhythm. Civilization un-invented it.”
