What's on your Island iPod?
Back in the day, a common diversion would be to list one’s “desert island disks”...what 10 albums would you want with you if you were stranded on a desert island (with electricity and a record player, I guess)?
Today, in our modern reality world, I’m updating this insignificant exercise: If you were planning to get yourself stranded on an island (in the hope of making a few bucks and getting your mug seen enough to land you a the top right position on Hollywood Squares, perhaps?) what songs *must* be programmed into your Island iPod?
To get the ball rolling (and demonstrate how non-hipster I truly am), I’ll toss out a few of my choices...off the top of my shaved head:
Beatles: Ballad of John and Yoko, I’m Only Sleeping, Yer Blues
Lennon: Working Class Hero, God
Stones: Soul Survivor, Jigsaw Puzzle, Sympathy for the Devil
Dylan: Tangled Up in Blue, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue
Patti Smith: Free Money
Alice Cooper: Generation Landslide
The Who: The Punk Meets the Godfather, Christmas, The Music Must Change
Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here
U2: One Tree Hill, Party Girl, Grace, One
Led Zep: Celebration Day, Night Flight, Misty Mountain Hop
Nirvana: Lounge Act, All Apologies
Joni Mitchell: California
Van Halen: Mean Street, Girl Gone Bad
Guns n’ Roses: Civil War, Rocket Queen, Coma
Rage Against the Machine: Down Rodeo
Ani DiFranco: Everyone is a Fuckin’ Napoleon, Fuel
Sex Pistols: anything from “Bollocks”
Bowie: Rock and Roll Suicide, God Knows I’m Good
Antigone Rising: Push It
Jethro Tull: Locomotive Breath
Sly and the Family Stone: If You Want Me to Stay
Grateful Dead: Ripple
Aerosmith: No More, No More
Natalie Merchant: Life is Sweet
Allman Brothers: Statesboro Blues
Public Enemy: Fight the Power
Bruce Springsteen: It’s So Hard to be a Saint in the City, Kitty’s Back
Black Sabbath: War Pigs, Fairies Wear Boots
Grand Funk: Inside Looking Out
Elton John: Ticking
Queen: Side Two of Queen II (for starters)
I didn’t even get to the Doors, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam, Prince, REM, Judas Priest, The Clash, White Lion, Elvis Costello, Hole, Beach Boys, Johnny Winter, Leonard Cohen, Kiss, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Talking Heads, Beastie Boys, Neil Young, Bob Marley...shit, this is waaaay harder than I thought. Exactly how much memory do one of these gadgets have?
(Full disclosure: I don’t even own an iPod.)
