Working up a thirst at Astoria Park

Afternoon sun beats on my back as
I lean over the rail on the banks of
the mighty East River
(really an estuary, but...)

Empty Poland Spring bottles abound
Filtered water once sold is long gone
Now free dirty water keeps the plastic afloat

In the midst: an ornate coffee table leg
from a piece of furniture manufactured
by an underpaid worker
to be sold to a consumer
willing to overpay

Table held up drinks, ashtrays, books never read…
only to be discarded when legs became unstable

Wobbly leg floats by
Waves from a passing trash barge send
it careening into empty water bottles and
I get thirsty…

Okay, it’s your turn. Write us a poem in the comments section.
